January Podcast & Book Club : Discussion Two
Lifestyle January 23, 2018Happy Tuesday!!! We are doing another podcast discussion today and this one is on the Cheryl Strayed episode on Super Soul Sunday! After I listened to it I totally became obsessed with Cheryl and got her book and have been meaning to watch Wild since. I can't believe I haven't seen it yet!!! The part in the end when she talks about that spot in France where they watch the paragliders - that is the spot in France we love!!! It is the one place we would go if we were to move abroad for a year - which we would love to do at some point in our lives!

Happy Tuesday!!! We are doing another podcast discussion today and this one is on the Cheryl Strayed episode on Super Soul Sunday! After I listened to it I totally became obsessed with Cheryl and got her book and have been meaning to watch Wild since. I can’t believe I haven’t seen it yet!!! The part in the end when she talks about that spot in France where they watch the paragliders – that is the spot in France we always go!!! It is the one place we would go if we were to move abroad for a year – which we do plan to do at some point in our lives!

These pics are all from that same spot where her boys jumped from and then a couple are from the field where they probably landed near. I loved that little story and I too would have been freaking out as a mother ha! And probably WILL freak out when Atticus asks to do it one year when he is older. And I will probably remember this podcast on that day! Below are some of my favorite quotes of hers and then just a little thought of mine with it! Leave your favorite quote of Cheryl’s (or from anyone!) and say why you love it!
1
This one was mentioned in the podcast as one of Oprah’s favorites! So I am curious if you guys are today what you always wanted to be or if you are something else. I am a mixture of both. I always pictured myself as a full time mom – I have always known I wanted to be a mom. I like this quote because all the time I feel so guilty when I leave the kids. Like because of that I am not being a good mom. (which I know isn’t true). But just because I never pictured myself juggling work and kids I sometimes feel like I am doing the wrong thing.
So I have tried to be more easy on myself. In so many ways I feel like this is what is right for us. Because David and I work together on both our businesses we get to trade off time being the parent and being the one at work. It works so well for us and I am so happy the kids get to grow up spending so much time with both parents. And also that Rosie can see that she can have kids and a career one day if she wants.

2
Ha ha I love this one. Maybe because I like looking back on my (shi*ty) days and realizing what she says is true. It does lead somewhere good, eventually.

This reminded me of what Paul Hawken said, “Ralph Waldo Emerson once asked what we would do if the stars only came out once every thousand years. No one would sleep that night, of course. The world would become religious overnight. We would be ecstatic, delirious, made rapturous by the glory of God. Instead the stars come out every night, and we watch television.” We used to watch the sunset every single evening in Hawaii – it is so easy on the beach! We need to remember to watch it more. And to go on drives to see the stars.
5
I just really like this one.

6
I like when life is simple as she says. Its not about the job you have or the pictures you post or the amount of money you make. Work hard, be kind, thats all.
Leave your favorite quote of Cheryl’s in the comments and why you like it. See you next time for our book discussion on Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic. XOXOXO Have a good day!

Amber,
I’ve been following you for years and only commented a couple of times. So embarrassing! Anyway, we have several common friends in NYC and Utah and I’ve loved following your adventures over the years. I think you’re darling and I love seeing and being inspired by your style. But I felt compelled to comment and tell you how brilliant this recent shift in your blog direction has been. I love the substance to it! It can be fun and semi frivolous with fashion topics – which I love. It can be informative about travel and kid recommendations. But I love that you’ve added this new layer of book and podcast discussions. It’s inspiring and thought provoking. It makes me come to your blog now not just to scroll through pretty pictures and get hair inspiration. But I also come now to get life inspiration from these podcast discussions. Keep it up girl. You’re doing great!
I just thought I should add that Atticus too can “see that he can have kids and a career one day if he wants” when you and your husband decide to work and parent together.
I love Cheryl sooooo much! I always listen to her Dear Sugar podcast 🙂 thanks for these amazing quotes amber!!!
Absolutely adore these quotes! I need to start listening to more podcasts!

So inspired by this podcast episode! Thank you for sharing all of your favorite quotes from the episode. It was nice to be reminded of the quotes that they said on the episode!! So so good!! I want to write some of these down and post them around my house to be encouraged on a daily basis. Some of these quotes really hit home for me. Thanks for starting a podcast discussion board. I have been meaning for so long to get into listening to podcasts so this has been a great start!
This was such an amazing thing for me to read this morning. I love all of these quotes, but ‘putting yourself in the way of beauty’ by Cheryl’s mom has to be my favorite. There are so many amazing things happening and it’s up to us to recognize them. I need to make more of an effort to see the sunrise and sunset because they’re so simple, but they’re gorgeous!

I love that you’re writing about podcasts that are encouraging and helpful. I’ve slowly been becoming quite the fan of these, so I love to see your suggestions!

Once you start listening to podcasts I am convinced you can’t stop! I usually only do music in the car and at the gym but now I often prefer a podcast! Glad you have been listening! xoxoxo
I love all the quotes you discussed and it’s so true that turning 25 I thought it would look so different, though I absolutely love where I’m at in life I always thought I ‘d own a home and start having kids by 26. Of course if I was financial able to do that I ‘d start having kids asap BUT that isn’t where my life is at the moment and God surely has a reason as to why my life is the way it is now. I also loved The part about the stars and sunset coming out every night but we choose to watch TV. Technology is such a tricky thing because I love getting wrapped up in a Netflix show but sometimes I get so wrapped up in all these good shows I forget to watch the real life script that is our life. I have to remind myself to step away from the screens and embrace the beauty that is playing before our eyes every day. Ok I’m going back to reading Big Magic 🙂
Oh girl I am the same – a good series will really get the best of me because I HATE to admit this but sometimes I get so excited to watch them that I can’t wait for the day to be over so I can get in pajamas and watch the show. YIKES. So I love these reminders so that I snap out of that. God definitely has a plan for you! Good for you for realizing that 🙂 And sooooo glad you are reading the book too! YAY!!!!! xoxoxo
Hello Everyone! those pictures are stunning and i am definitely adding this spot to my vacation bucket list! I enjoyed this podcast, my absolute favorite quote was this.. Oprah mentions it as well and it just stuck with me and I love it. “You let time pass. That’s the cure. You survive the days. You float like a rabid ghost through the weeks. You cry and wallow and lament and scratch your way back up through the months. And then one day you find yourself alone on a bench in the sun and you close your eyes and lean your head back and you realize you’re okay.” I don’t know some of the battles that people i come across are fighting, however, I hope they know they are never alone. Social medias such as this blog or instagram are the coolest because it allows us to share our lives and interact with one another. I learn, grow and feel truly inspired by and humbled by it all. I feel this is the perfect words strung together to make a powerful quote that can relate to anyone! I hope you all are having a happy Tuesday!!
Omg yes that quote!!! 🤗🙌🏻🙌🏻 So powerful!!
LeeAnn!! Definitely add this spot to your bucket list! It is such a special place! And I love that you feel inspired and humbled by social media – I think that says a lot about you. It is easy to see the bad in social media and I think a lot of people let it get the best of them (I see that a lot on here) so I love that you see the good in it! Thank you for sharing beauty!!!!
Hello!
I love this podcast club and the quotes really encourage me.
Amber, can you please tell me where the spot is in France. I cannot find it in the post. thank you.
Found it. TY
XOXO 💛😊
These pictures are so pretty, it looks so peacful there! I am loving these discussions about the podcast

Aw thanks! It really is so peaceful – it is like out of a storybook!
I loved this podcast and love this book club! It’s been inspiring and really something to use for inspiration.
Aw good I am so glad!!! Thank you for reading!!! xoxox
This podcast was so amazing I listened to it 3x!! (Also, wait can you give us like a download thing for those cute quotes?!) my favorite favorite favorite favorite quote was “be brave enough to break your own heart.” Omggg it’s just SO good!! It’s really amazing how often you follow that logic when you are just so passionate about something but how easily fear or self consciousness can totally mess with you. I am also trying to be really forgiving with myself this year. I’ve said it before how I’m in PT school but I would seriously let every grade I didn’t expect or criticism or stress freak me out because I wasn’t perfect. And this year I am working really hard to be easy on myself and let it be okay that I ran a little slower today, or didn’t get the million things in my planner done, or ate pizza for dinner haha so I loved that this podcast was really about allowing yourself to be a human and trusting the whole process of life.
Seriously, this podcast changed my life. And since I listened to it on my speakers I’m pretty sure my puppy is also a changed man. Haha
XOXOX
Hahaha I love the puppy comment. It really was a great podcast, so far I ‘ve listened to a couple of these podcasts and they all are so inspiring
🙌🏻🙌🏻 Which ones?! I’m such a podcast junkie.
Oh I lovvve how you put all of this! I loved that quote too but love how you related it to your life in those everyday aspects! I definitely need to be better at that too – geez us women are so hard on ourselves sometimes. Good to have these little reminders 🙂 I will definitely see if we can make some sort of downloadable PDF for the quotes – see if you can right click and save them though first and let me know if that doesn’t work! Thank you so much for commenting and sharing! And good luck with PT school – sounds like you are crushing it! xoxoxo
You can totally save them on a desktop version! So all good 🙂 I’m obsessed with that design, its on my BFB box too!
At first I didn’t think I would connect with this podcast and then she started talking about being brave enough to take risks because all the best things happen when you take risks. That was something I needed to hear today because I’m currently debating taking a risk and leaving a job I’ve had for 7 years or stay. From the risk discussion on, I felt connected to this podcast.
Another quote I felt connected with was the first quote you said you liked. It is something I need to continuously remind myself when I feel like I’m not where I should be or that I haven’t done things the proper way because at the end of the day as long as I’m happy with my present why let things I thought I should have done bother me.
Again I’m so thankful that you have started this because these are so great to listen to and put into perspective !

That is definitely a big change you are making!!! Good for you, I am sure you are making a good decision for you and I am so glad this one helped you! I too didn’t think I would like it but I actually think a lot of her super soul episodes start off with me thinking, eh this one doesn’t apply to me or something and by the end I am like “I love this person!!!!” Thank you so much for sharing and good luck with this next big step in your life, I am excited for you! xoxoxo
Hi Amber!
I had not heard of Cheryl Strayard before this podcast, so it was exciting to hear new insights. I really liked the first quote you mentioned. Most of the time life does not go the way that we planned. I bet if everyone around the age of 50 was asked this question, only the basic things would have happened to them. Take schooling for example. If you put in the right amount of work, then you will most likely get the certificate/degree at the end of the program. This is something one could be in control of. However, marriage is something you can not make happen to yourself. No matter how hard you try, you have to find someone who is willing to commit themselves back to you. There are some things in life that are just out of our control, while some other things are. Only God knows our plan for each one of us. Despite all the planning that we do, things are going to happen along the way that were not accounted for. And my hero, my grandfather, always reminds me to not get mad at the things that are out of our control. The author’s quote really makes sense: circumstances change so we have to change with them. Thank you Amber for this, and congratulations on your new calling. I am waiting to hear back from my bishop on which calling I will be fulfilling. See you soon for Big Magic!
Aw thank you for sharing Fayth- you put that so well! Love what your grandpa would tell you, sounds like an amazing guy. That is something David reminds me of sometimes too and it is always a good reminder. Do you have a calling you are hoping for? I always get so nervous waiting for new ones lol. Thank you so much for sharing this I really loved reading your comment. xoxoxo
Amber. These quotes have really helped me see things bc I can totally relate to a lot of them. Especially that last one. For a long time I’ve been trying to get done with education for other people at their own pace and not my own. I’m going to keep in mind that I’m doing this for me and that’s all that matters. Thanks for posting these great reminders.
Rachel! Aw good I am so glad. Education especially is so different for everyone – definitely something you have to do at your pace! I hope you are enjoying school and good for you for getting your education! I still wish I had finished college. xoxoxo
Hey Amber, honestly this book club is the best! I feel like the two podcasts from this month kind of flowed on from one another; especially in regards to intentions. Now that I have listened to this podcast I really want to get this book and also read wild; I’ve also never seen the movie but always say I want to! :)I loved the quote ‘Be brave enough to break your own heart’ especially as it relates to not only taking risks in relationships but in any part of your life, it’s a reminder to not let your fear stop you and also ‘it’s okay if you make the wrong decision…there is no decision you can’t learn from’; if you make a mistake it’s okay you will get past it and you won’t make the same mistake twice. I think times I’m too hard on myself and listening to this podcast I’ve felt like I’m not worrying about any little mistake I make as long as I learn from it I will grow to be a better person in the long run. ‘I believe in the power of words to reset our intentions, clarify our thoughts…quotes at their core almost always shout yes!’ I just love this quote because it is so true, everyone always finds a quote they can relate to. 🙂 x
Danielle – I loved this too and loved even more how you put this!!! I love hearing how everyone takes quotes and relates them to their own lives in their own way. It has been so fun reading everyone’s comments! So true that there is no decision you can’t learn from.. even if I feel like I am constantly saying to myself “well lesson learned!” lol lots of lessons being learned over here but that is why I love these little quotes. Thanks for sharing! xoxo
1. “Cultivate an understanding that life is long, that people both change and remain the same, that every last one of us will need to fuck up and be forgiven, that we’re all just walking and walking and walking and trying to find our way, that all roads lead eventually to the mountaintop.”
― Cheryl Strayed, Brave Enough
Whenever I’m doubting the mere existence of whom I am or the doubts that surface when I make mistakes, I try to really pause in the pursuit and realize that if we were all perfect, we certainly would not be human. We are meant to seek forgiveness and learn how to have mercy and forgive others too. At the end of this beautiful, chaotic, messy, yet satisfying- beyond- measure life, we’re all just waiting to reach the peak, the mountaintop, the moment when it all makes sense. We all search for that, and if we’re lucky we find it in a thousand different ways.
2. “most importantly love
like its the only thing you know how
at the end of the day all this
means nothing
this page
where you’re sitting
your degree
your job
the money
nothing even matters
except love and human connection
who you loved
and how deeply you loved them
how you touched the people around you
and how much you gave them”
― Cheryl Strayed, Brave Enough
I’ve always loved this quote. It really puts me, the world, and my place/purpose in it into fruition, and also allows me to really feel and understand what life is truly about. Sometimes we all get caught up in the mundane routines, we’re all trying to follow this creative path, mixed with overlying passions, and then we just hope we make it out the other side a little wiser, a little better, and a lot more open to humanity, suffering, pain, and overall, the one thing that makes the most sense at the end of the day- love. Seek and find love for truly at the end- what matters is how you felt, who you touched, and how well you did at doing both.
3. “You let time pass. That’s the cure. You survive the days, you float like a rabid ghost through the weeks, you cry, wallow and lament and scratch your way back up through the months and then one day you find yourself, alone on a bench in the sun and you close your eyes and lean your head back and you realize you’re ok.”
-Oprah read this quote on the podcast and it resonated so deeply within the confines of my own story, the way I’ve experienced people close to me passing from illness, or extremely unlikely circumstances. There’s nothing quite like experiencing true pain and suffering, and learning how to cope, how to remember, and how to live out your life the way they’d want you to. Understanding that you’ll be forever changed by their absence, but also changed for the better, because nothing is more fragile than loving someone with your entire heart- but not getting to say it out loud anymore.
4. Last but certainly not least- “Be brave enough to break your own heart.”
I’ve done this too many times. And I’ve thanked myself for doing so, many, many times.
Thank you for sharing your favorite quotes! I hope you enjoy mine as well!
Xoxo,
Robin
Can I just print this comment and keep it on my wall?! Love these quotes you shared and especially what you said about the first one how we are lucky if we find that mountaintop in a thousand different ways – ahhh I love love love that!!! Thank you so much for sharing Robin!
“The useless days will add up to something. The shitty waitressing jobs. The hours writing in your journal. The long meandering walks. The hours reading poetry and story collections and novels and dead people’s diaries and wondering about sex and God and whether you should shave under your arms or not. These things are your becoming.”
This is my favorite quote of Cheryl’s because it just rings so true. One of my proudest moments was working 2 full time jobs through college (one as a waitress and one as a leasing agent for student apartments). I student taught and never slept, but it taught me that I could do anything I set my mind to. The semester I student taught and worked 80 hours a week, I also got a 4.0 and made the dean’s list. I also love to write and learn new things, and again I am tackling a bunch of things at once- teaching high school, writing about my life and love on my blog, and completing a master’s degree in computer science, and it is hard but so invigorating!
You are superwoman!!! Wow that is really amazing. And yes I love that quote too especially since most success stories I hear (especially on the How I Built This podcast) almost all worked crappy jobs with crappy hours. I know I did. It all leads to learning hard work. Congrats on all of your success Cassie!!! xoxoxo
Such good quotes. Needed this today! Thank you Amber!
Thank you for reading! So glad you liked one of the quotes! xoxox
Hi Amber. Thank you for your recommendation. I have admit that I never heard of Cheryl before. She appears to be well known and respected. Having listed to the podcast, have to admit that wasn’t very impressed or inspired by her. Her book of quotes provides the series of quotes-well known truths -in her own words. Have learnt that her situation has improved, that she shared her deepest story with the world, that time will pass etc. To me, nothing really new. I certainly don’t feel encouraged to learn more about her or her work.
Having said that, I greatly appreciate your recommendations. Looking forward your picks for February. Many thanks, best wishes x
That is okay! Some episodes podcasts that have been recommended to me haven’t resonated with me either! Thanks for listening and commenting though!!! xoxox
I’ll be listening to this podcast on the bus on the way home from school!
