50 Tips for Traveling With a Baby
Lifestyle April 11, 2015

After 9 months of life my baby has been on 44 flights (including layovers) and has been to more states than I can count and 6 countries β so I am finally sharing all the tips I have learned along the way! I have traveled alone overseas with my boy multiple times as well as cross country etc. It is definitely a treat to have a husband or partner with you but if you donβt, donβt worry β you got this!!! I know that seems like a crazy amount of flights and a lot of people think βpoor baby!β but honestly you donβt have to have their schedule all out of whack to travel. In fact he is happiest when we are out and about and around people so he loves traveling and has grown accustomed to it. Most of my friends always gave the excuse that they couldnβt go because of the baby. I always thought that was silly and didnβt ever want my baby to hold me back from life experiences, I wanted him to experience them with me and it is 100% doable. So here are some things I have learnedβ¦
1. WHITE ONESIES:Β (applies to 1-6 mo.) Atticus was an explosive pooper when he was exclusively breastfeedingΒ would have multiple blowouts a day! So when traveling I would stock up on white onesies and used them as disposable onesies. It makes it so much easier to just throw them away after then to deal with dirty, stinky, wet laundry! You can find them cheap on amazon,Β here.
2. BRING YOUR BUMPERS!!!!:Β (applies to 5 mo. +) By now your baby is (possibly) rolling over and what not. MOST cribs in hotels are rod iron cribs with no bumpers, I think it might be a liability thing in the US because most abroad have bumpers. Atticus always has his head up against the side and I can tell he is so uncomfortable in those cribs and wakes up. We now bring our bumpers with us and he sleeps like normal! Definitely suggest this if you want to keep your normal night routine goingΒ Β It is also smaller than a pack n play! Atticus hasΒ soft sheetsΒ that he really loves and sleeps best with so we bring his fitted sheet as well.
-If you do choose to bring a pack n play I have found that reviews sayΒ thisΒ is the best one to travel with.
3. CARRY ON:Β I personally like to always have a carry on with me even when I travel alone with Atticus because if my luggage got lost (this has happened to me before and it is a nightmare, I never got it back!) I want to have all of his necessities on me and donβt want to worry about finding diaper cream, socks, onesies, bottles, binkies, books, etc. in a foreign country or foreign city. I also like having extra sweaters and snacks and toys in there in case he gets cold on the plane or something! I know it is something extra to deal with so if the thought of it stresses you out then donβt worry about a carry on and just check everything Β but see next tip for how I handle it through the airport..
4. GETTING THROUGH SECURITY:Β Like I said in #3, I always have a carry on bag so it can be a handful with a stroller, carseat, carry on, baby, etc. so here is what I do when I am alone (if you have your husband, its a breeze just take the baby and let them do the restΒ Β )β¦.
-Carry my baby on me (I love Solly Wraps andΒ Ergo Wraps. I usedΒ Solly WrapsΒ 0-6mo. now I useΒ Ergo 360Β because he is so wiggly)
-Put the laptop in the basket of the stroller β carry on above the basket and then attach the carseat on top of all that then put the diaper bag and anything else in the carseat and on the handles
-When you get to the line keep your baby on you til you have everything ready to go.. They will make you put the carseat through the belt and then you will fold up the stroller and someone else will carry it through. If you are having trouble folding the stroller with your baby wrapped on you, just ask someone to help!
-TAKE YOUR TIME!!!! People can wait, donβt get stressed. And I canβt tell you how many times people have helped me through security! Once Atticus was crying in line and a TSA agent told me to leave all my stuff and go through and wait on the bench on the other side.. he did everything for me and I cried. It was so so unbelievably nice.
-They will also make you take your baby out of the carseat/stroller before going through but having them in a wrap is fine. So keep that in mind for naps. Donβt let them fall asleep in the carseat right before you go through security because you will have to wake them up. This is another reason a carrier is nice.
-You will also have to get a hand swipe after. Every time. They will swipe your hands with a wand thing and test it for explosive materials. They will also test any liquids you bring.
-If I had the umbrella stroller I would just carry Atticus and put the carry on in the stroller!
**Note that you can bring as many liquids as you want β juice, water, milk, etc.
5. STROLLER LINE:Β Always ask a TSA worker if they have a line designated for strollers, many do! And if not then 90% of the time they will let you go through TSA Pre or First Class line.
6. IF YOUβRE BRINGING A CARSEAT, DONβT CHECK IT:Β First of all it would be a pain if they lost it, and second, if the plane isnβt full they will let you take your carseat on with you! (SCORE!) I had this happen on my flight to Paris and the flightΒ was a BREEZE!! It is worth having the trouble of lugging it around in my opinion ifΒ could potentially have it on the plane.
7. INTERNATIONAL TRAVELING W/ CARSEAT:Β (applies to 6mo. +) When they get older I suggest bringing an umbrella stroller and leaving the carseat at home! You can rent carseats from Rental Car companies and it is a pain to deal with an umbrella stroller + a car seat. Although you wonβt be able to have them in the carseat on the planeΒ Β so that does stink! Kind of have to weigh your pros and cons with that one because there are definitely both pros and cons.
8. RENT APARTMENTS, NOT HOTELS:Β We love to useΒ HomeAway.comΒ because you can rent entire homes/apartments! This is a complete lifesaver because it is nice to have a separate room for a baby to sleep in so you can put them down at a decent hour and they wonβt be disturbed. It is also nice to have a kitchen so you can wash bottles, etc. in a sink NOT connected to a bathroom. I hate washing bottles in a sink in a bathroom it seems weird! They also usually have a washer and dryer so its nice to be able to do some laundry and feel more at home.

9. ELEVATORS INTERNATIONAL:Β Other countries are not like America and most donβt require ramps or elevators. MakeΒ SUREΒ your hotel has an elevator and if possibleΒ check to see the dimensions of the elevator! A lot of elevators abroad only fit one person (NOT A STROLLER! And definitely not you and your stroller and your bags) and you will end up making multiple trips up stairs multiple times a day and it is exhausting! Trust me.
10. TIME ZONE:Β When traveling within a 3-4 hour difference in time zone, we keep Atticus on the same or push it back/forward one hour. This is just personal preference because we travel often and want to make it easy on him. But if you are worried that your night routine you just established will go out the window then I suggest doing this! Atticus always went right back to normal but i think it just makes it easier on them. Obviously, abroad is a different story and you will adjust accordingly. Atticus didnβt have a problem adjusting either time, knock on wood. I just made sure to book a flight during the day (nightime in Europe) and then tried to have him sleep most the time or as much as possible. Then when we got there it was day time and I tried to continue his 1.5 hour schedule (see his scheduleΒ here) and then by nighttime he was super tired so I gave him a bath and put him down β once we did that he was already on Europe time. Then same coming back.
-For naps I continue to do them like we would at home. On vacation it is obviously a lot easier if your baby will nap in the carseat/stroller.. Atticus does so while we were out and about I tried carrying him or keeping the sun shade open so he would be awake and then close the sunshade and make sure it was nice and dark for him to sleep. It helps if you plan your day in a way to accommodate naps.. for instance.. go to a museum during nap time so you can be walking and moving while they sleep and then head to a park afterwards when they need to up and playing. We also like to go back to the hotel for one of his naps (or two when he was younger and took more) so he can be more comfy. But again, this is also because we travel so often so if you donβt make it back to the hotel it is not a big deal. It is easiest when they are younger and sleep through anything but we try to keep the noise consistent so he doesnβt notice the change and wake up.
11. TOYS:Β I was so excited to have a diaper bag with toys etc. for my baby but when they are super young they donβt want or use toys yet so donβt bother with them. I would only bring a book or two for him to look at. He will be much more entertained by funny faces and snuggling. When they get older and love toys, bring a few of their favs and a couple of toys they havent played with yet. Mostly they will love to explore the seat belt, brochures, tear apart magazines, play with your lipstick, etc. haha.
12. MUSIC VIDEOS/SHOWS/ETC:Β If your baby loves music or a certain music video or a show, make sure you have them downloaded on your phone so you can use them as a recourse if your baby is crying and youre stressed! Taylor Swift βShake it Offβ music video is a must on all plane rides for us. He goes from crying to bobbing his head and waving his arms in seconds.
13. MIND SET!!!!:Β I think mindset is sooo huge in traveling with a baby!!! Its easy to dread the plane ride and get anxious butΒ they always end up being a million times better than you think! So donβt stress about it and just have the mindset that you are going on a trip with your best bud and try to get excited rather than nervous. It sounds super cheesy but it makes the world a difference when you just adjust your thinking. If you dread it and are stressed, he will know and it will work up both of you. Just have relax and have fun with your little buddy.
14.GETTING TO YOUR SEAT!:Β By now you have gate checked your stroller and possibly carseat and youre left with bags and a baby. Its easiest in my opinion to be wearing them in a carrier and then push your carryon with your diaper bag on top. If you have your carseat too, then put the carseat (with baby in it) on the carry on (if it has wheels) and push the carseat like its a stroller (does that make sense?!) but just obviously do it slow and carefully so it doesnβt tip over. This is a lifesaver because its 100% impossible to roll a suitcase, carry a baby in a carseat, and a diaper bag all at once!
15. MEAN PEOPLE + WINDOW SEAT:Β I have been lucky and havenβt been bothered by people. We have had a few rude looks but nothing said to us. I have heard horror stories though! When you are getting looks because your baby is crying its best to be in a window seat and just turn your body to the window and shut everyone out so you canβt see anyone. It makes me less stressed and just focused on the baby and what he needs.
16. WINDOW + AISLE + EVEN MORE SPACE:Β If you are traveling with someone request the window AND aisle seat instead of two next to eachother and if you are willing to spend a tad extra do it in the even more space section (available on Jetblue and other airlines) because 9 times out of 10 we get the middle seat to ourselves too! No one wants to pay extra for a middle seat so they will take an aisle elsewhere.

17. FIRST CLASS:Β It is not true when people say that you cant fly first class with a baby because they will upset the people who paid more. A lot of people in first class are being flown on their companies dime or they are people who have kids of their own and get it. Any time a company has flown me first class everyone has been SO nice. It is also so nice to have the extra room and a lay flat seat. So if you can afford it, donβt hold back on first class.
18. BOARD EARLY:Β Generally you get to board early if you have a baby so take advantage! Some do not let you board early though, and if not, donβt stress. People are happy to help you. It makes them feel good knowing they helped someone so donβt shy away from help.
19. ASK FOR EXTRA SEAT:Β Get to the gate early and ask the agent if there is an empty seat next to you or if there is any way you can be moved next to an empty seat on the plane. 99% of the time they will if the plane is not full.
20. DOCTORS:Β I am a worrier so anytime we go somewhere I make sure I know where the nearest E.R. or Pediatrician is located. Especially abroad this is nice to know.
21: DONβT BRING SHOES!:Β Okay okay shoes are cute on babies and I maybe bring one or two pairs of moccasins that fold up small but I mean they arent even walking yet so save the luggage space!
22. BREASTFEEDING:Β I would always bring a little cooler with a bottle with frozen milk in case I didnβt want to breastfeed. Sometimes when you are first breastfeeding your boobs are so full and literally squirt everywhere hahaΒ see this storyΒ for my experience with that. It kind of stressed me out sometimes so I liked to bring a bottle too for the first few months. I also would HIGHLY recommend pumping as much as possible beforehand so your boobs arenβt bursting at the seams!

24. BREASTFEED ANYWHERE:Β You definitely canβt be shy about breastfeeding while traveling. I have breastfed in cabs, planes, boats, beaches, on the floor at museums, in line at Disneyland, I mean anywhere! I donβt use a cover and I personally think they are more of a pain and more obvious than just having your shirt cover up. I always make sure to wear loose shirts. And it also helps to wear swimsuits that are easy to pull down.
24. DONβT KEEP SNACKS IN THE CUP HOLDER:Β Anytime you put your diaper bag through security stuff will get knocked over and spilled. If you have snacks with lids (like the puffs that come in tall containers) donβt put them in the side cup holders of the bag because the lids will get taken off and will spill. Canβt tell you how many times this has happened to us! It is sooo annnnoying.
25. RENT A CAR:Β Renting a car is easiest with a baby so you can just keep some stuff in the car (stroller, snacks, etc.) and you arenβt having to get in and out of taxis all day. Also nice to have change of clothes and whatnot in there but not on you so if you do need it you can go back to the car!
26. STAY AS CLOSE TO THE CITY/ATTRACTION AS POSSIBLE:Β You are gonna have to go back for nap times or just to relax so its nice to be close to whatever it is youβre going to see. (i.e. Paris β the Eifell Tower, California β the beach, you get the point) So when you are inevitably spending time in the hotel you feel like youβre on vacation still. It is also nice to be close so you can pop in and out of the city.
27. USE THE BATHROOM:Β Use the bathroom at the hotel to put the crib in so it is quiet, dark, and they wonβt be disturbed or woken up! Or wake you upΒ Β we always do this when we donβt have aΒ HomeAway. If you are putting them to bed early then youβll want to either wash your face and brush your teeth before they go to bed or use the bathroom in the lobby!
28. NOISE CANCELING HEADPHONES:Β The freaking announcements on the plane are SO MOTHER FREAKING LOUD!!! They always wake Atticus up so we got noise canceling headphones. The ones we have found,Β here.

29. BLANKET OR MAT:Β When they are little its nice to have a blanket for them to wiggle and roll over on before the flight so they get most of their energy out. I would get to the gate, lay the blanket down and let them play until we boarded. I usedΒ this blanketΒ since it folded up so small but was still a good size. I brought it in addition to the one I would use to cover him/let him snuggle with. Obviously you donβt want to use the one he will be sleeping with to put on the ground.
30. BRAVE THE GERMS:Β Now that Atticus is crawling, I let him crawl all over the ground and airport near the gate prior to boarding. It gets all of his wiggles out and afterwards I just use disinfecting wipes to clean him up. But if you are too worried about germs and try keeping him on your lap the whole time it might be a nightmare on the plane. There is literally NO way to avoid germs when traveling so be prepared for itΒ Β they will be okay!
31. LET YOUR BABY FLIRT AWAY:Β While getting on the plane face them outwards so they can smile and cheese it up with everyone. If they love your baby they wonβt care so much when they cryΒ
32. TAKE OFF/LANDING:Β Everyone says to nurse/bottle feed during take off/landing but for Atticus this never bothered him. I always did it and then one time he wouldnβt breast feed and I was soo nervous just waiting for him to start crying and he was perfectly happy. Since then I donβt worry too much if he doesnβt feel like it and he has never fussed about it. I would do it to be safe but definitely donβt wake a sleeping baby to nurse them for take off and if they arenβt nursing donβt stress, it might not bother them and just try to distract them with a toy instead.
**When traveling abroadΒ they will make you attach an orange seatbelt to your seatbelt and fasten the baby in it. So keep that in mindΒ so you arenβt caught off guard.
33. SWADDLING:Β After I let Atticus get his wiggles out I would swaddle him and push him in the stroller til he was asleep. Then I would get to the gate, take the carseat (with him in it) out, fold down the stroller, then take him out slowly so he didnβt wake up and then leave the stroller and carseat for them to take away. That way he was already asleep for take off. When you get on the plane you can swaddle on your lap or go to the bathroom and do it on the changing table.
34. BRING MORE CLOTHES!:Β Anytime we go on vacation I always think, βI could have sworn I packed more clothes!β Babies just go through clothes so dang fast so bring way more than you think you will need!
35. BRINGING YOUR PUMP ABROAD:Β My pump blew a fuse the first day and I had to throw it away. Pumps are expensive so I really recommend bringing Β a hand pump either as a back up or instead of or a battery powered pump!

36. CHANGING DIAPERS:Β When on vacation be prepared to change a diaper anywhere β on the ground in museums, airports, ally ways, etc. Just go with it! You can always use hand sanitizerΒ
-Most airplanes will have changing tables so when they do obviously use those but when they dont (smaller airplanes donβt β whenever we flew out of Alabama they never had them) I just change his diaper on my lap (I had no other option really?) I always ask the people next to me if they mind before I do.. They will always say of course, and wonβt mind but I just think its polite to let them know because it is a stinky diaperΒ Β If they do say they mind then too bad haha! You gotta do what you gotta do.
37. FLIGHT TIMES:Β Get a flight time that works with your babies schedule! When they are young usually red eyes are great because they just sleep in your arms the whole time! However if you are going to a completely different time zone get one during the day and try to help them relax and sleep majority of the time.
38. AVOID THE BACK OF THE PLANE!!!:Β It is so annoying being in the back where people are standing in line to go to the bathroom or flight attendants are chatting. It is distracting for the baby and they have a harder time falling asleep.

39. GET A TUB!:Β Make sure where you are staying has a bathtub or make sure you have looked at photos and know the sink is big enough. If you have an apartment usually kitchen sinks are big enough. Bath time really helps calm him down so they are a must for us.
40. PLAN AN EXTRA DAY:Β Make sure wherever you are going you plan an extra day. Atticus will sometimes have a bad day or I can tell he just wants to have a chill day at the hotel so sometimes plans have to be pushed back or rearranged. Be flexible and adding an extra day that is unplanned on to all vacations really helps with this. You can space stuff out more or just have an entire day to do nothing but snuggle and recoup.
40. GETTING THROUGH THE FLIGHT:Β Now that Atticus is older he wants to be moving and wiggling. Lots of times I end up kneelingΒ on the floor in front of the seat and letting him crawl around on the seats. Or sometimes David will take him into the bathroom, sanitize the changing table, and let him roll around and play on there for a few minutes. It also really helps to just walk around and let them look at all the people. Luckily most planes now have tvβs so you can turn on a show and let him watch. You can also take down the tray and put snacks and toys on it, for some reason he thinks that is fun. Also I sometime stand him up and let him look at the people behind us and have him smile and play with them.
41. DONT FORGET THE SOUND MACHINE!:Β This is a complete lifesaver so you donβt have to be quiet or worry about people in the hallways of the hotel being loud.

42. SOME THINGS I ALWAYS PACK:Β I always like to bring Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Q Tips, diaper cream, thermometer,Β dissolvable teething tablets, bath soap,Β baby lotion, infantΒ tooth brush,Β tooth paste, nail clippers, snot rocket thing,Β noise canceling headphones, dish soap in travel container (to clean pump, bottles, etc.), grocery bag for dirty clothes,Β ergo 360, disinfecting wipes,Β rice cereal, hand sanitizer, 100 SPF,Β sippy cup with straw,Β puffs,Β apple sauce pouches, noise machine, blanket for airport floor, blanket to snuggle, toys, a few books, and hats. (of course clothes tooΒ Β )
43. DONβT BRING TOO MANY DIAPERS:Β You can always go buy more diapers! So donβt bring a crazy amount and it wonβt take up too much space in the luggage and instead you can bring things that you wonβt want to re purchase there.
44. LAYOVERS:Β I personally try to avoid layovers like the plague but sometimes they are unavoidable! Donβt pick a layover that is 40 minutes or less because in my opinion that is not enough time! You have to wait for them to bring you your stroller and then once you have that you still have to walk to the next gate and if you are at a big airport, that sometimes involved hopping on an airtran. If you do have a short layover make sure you check all your bags AND stroller and carseat so you can just get off the plane and go. Missing a connecting flight with a baby isΒ awful so if you can plan a longer layover then it is probably the safer bet! We missed ours once and it suckkkked.Β

45. BACKPACK DIAPER BAG:Β Backpack diaper bags are an absolute MUST for traveling!!! They are so much easier when you are bending over so much, going in and out of taxis, walking a lot, etc. I like to useΒ this one.
46. CHANGE OF CLOTHES FOR YOU TOO:Β Donβt forget to bring a change of clothes for yourself too. I alwaysΒ end up with either breast milk, poop, pee, spit up, rice cereal, etc. or a couple of the above and there have been times I wished I had a spare shirt for myself too!
47. DONβT USE WATER ON THE PLANE:Β You are allowed to bring as many liquids as you want and if you happen to run out you can always ask a flight attendant for a water bottle. Donβt use the water in the bathrooms for rinsing or anything, apparently it is purified with chemicals and can get you sick! I read this online and was pretty surprised. I obviously do not know this is 100% true but I would say to not risk it! Flight attendants will give you as much water or juice as you need!
48. WHAT STROLLERS I LOVE:Β I use theΒ Uppa Baby G LuxeΒ and love it. I have heard really great things about theΒ Maclaren strollersΒ as well and have wanted to try one. Before I used an umbrella stroller I loved traveling with theΒ Quinny Buzz ExtraΒ and theΒ Maxi Cosi Carseat. It folds up really nice and still has storage underneath. It also is pretty light compared to theΒ Uppa Baby VistaΒ that I also used. The Uppa Baby Vista is nice because it has all that storage underneath. I liked traveling with both but I would probably say I liked the Quinny more!
49. OTHER COUNTRIES SECURITY LINE:Β Getting through security in each country is different. It would help to maybe google the particular country beforehand if you are nervous about it. I sort of wish I had becuase I was all alone with Atticus when he was 3 months flying out of Barcelona airport. They kept speaking in different languages and telling me to do something I didnβt understand. To me it sounded like they were saying to put Atticus on the conveyor belt haha! I started crying because they were getting so frustrated with me and I didnβt want to put my baby down but they were telling me to! Apparently you canβt go through the sensor holding your baby.. Someone else had to hold Atticus while I walked through and then they handed him to me. It was really stressful and I had no idea what was going on and to make matters worse I was SO tight on time for my flight! So be prepared for anything when traveling abroad!
50. REQUEST A BASSINET:Β I have never been lucky enough to get one of these.. on my flight home from Barcelona it was broken and the other flights they werenβt available. They basically move you to an exit row and they fasten a bassinet to the wall. You can put your baby in there to sleep and it would be nice to give your arms a break! You donβt always get lucky but definitely ask!
Hopefully this answered most of your questions!! I tried to cover everything possible but if you still have any further questions let me know!Β Also remember that if your flight is canceled or something there is (almost) ALWAYS something the airline can do. You may have to cry and pull a βmy baby needs to get home, we donβt have any spare diapers, etc.β card but they WILL accommodateΒ you if you are persistent enough. They canceled our flight home from Jamaica and said we had to leave the next day and have a 7 hour layover. That was completely unacceptable in my opinion so after LOTS of going back and forthΒ with the workers and manager, they booked us on a different airline that night. Donβt mess with mama bear! Just kiddingβ¦ sort of.Β But honestly, at the end of the day we just want to make our littles happy so hopefully this helps you with your trip! xo

It’s realy a biggest and helpful list for travel. I read it before and got again BUT in any hot weather, Don’t forget to carry an extra rechargeable fan If you travel with your baby in a stroller.

Helpful list. We’re expecting baby #1 in June and have zero plans to stop traveling. I will say that with so much waste that can come with having a baby, throwing away onesies seems incredibly wasteful.
Pretty comprehensive list. It’s impossible to anticipate every contingency as a parent but this makes a pretty good attempt. π

this is beautifully done and you’ve really covered it all! thanks lovely!
Thank you for your comprehensive article! We’re planning our big vacation right now. I’m not worried about sleep because we trained our girl with HWL method from parental-love. It’s so great! She’s sleeping much better now and what’s most important – is falling right back to sleep, even if waken accidentaly. Although we know that the plane trip is different than even the hardest day in you own crib. The organisation itself is stressing me out!
sooo helpful for a FTM traveling with her 8mo for the first time!
Thank you for your wonderful tips. Also check out @mini.globetrotters on Instagram for more ideas on baby friendly places to travel to with babies and toddlers, travelling tips and airline / hotel reviews π
Thank you for such a lovely article. For a mother, life is so beautiful to spend time with the baby but at the same time we also need do lot of hard work to take care of our baby and we feel exhausted specially to carry our baby for long duration. If youβre going through the same, strollers can help you a lot when you go out or travelling with the baby. I am also running through such situation so, I was looking for some suggestions and references to buy a good stroller. Here is a page βHow to Buy a Baby Strollerβ I found on WhatToExpect thatβs providing good info and suggestions for buying a baby stroller. Hope you all like it β¦ enjoy reading π
Love the baby travel tips! Did you know that some of the links you posted, for example the one for the noise canceling headphones, lead to the same pillow on Amazon. Would be grea to see the actual product you use/recommend. Thank you!
Your article is immensely helpful! I am pinning it and will use so many tips for my first trip with my baby.
Great tips, thanks for sharing your experiences. I just added noise cancelling headphones to my cart on Amazon because last time I traveled alone my little one had just fallen asleep after crying of course and then woke up abruptly when they started talking.
Awesome content! It is so important to keep traveling with your kiddos! Most airlines will allow you to carry a stroller and carseat and any other baby equipment for free. Check out our travel blog with our baby. We went to South America for 3 months with our 6 month old baby. Hope this helps you to keep traveling with your little kiddo! https://travelneverends.co/blog/5-things-to-think-about-when-traveling-abroad-with-a-baby

Thank you so much for very helpful information, my little girl is going to be 4 month before our first international flight, I kept thinking about do I need a stroller or not?! As I am flying to my hometown and my sister got one for me. Do I need stroller during my flight? On the way there I have one stop at Paris and on the way back I have 2 stops already. Thanks, loved Atticus already;-))
Great advice! I read article wondering how you came up with 50 when I only did 18! Immediately apparent that I look at is a guy so nothing about breastfeeding and such!!! http://www.photographyandtravel.com/infant-travel/.
Loved reading this. Thank you! super helpful, loved your photos π
Omg I love you!!! And I love #31 LOL
I actually made a video travelling with our 6 month old! Check it out hope it helps !
It is mentioned multiple times that you can bring unlimited liquids. i thought there were a limit to amounts of liquids on flights. is it different if you have a baby?
Great article, I am pregnant and we travel a lot and don’t plan to change that when she is born. This is great to get an idea of what to expect, and what can help make it easier! Thanks for the tips. I love your swimwear, can you tell me, where did you get that from?
Traveling with a baby really taught. I think every mom agree with me especially for the new mom. Baby travel gear really essential for mom. I have to travel with my baby most of the times. Thanks for sharing baby travel essential gear. It’s really helped me a lot. This post is so helpful as I plan for my first solo trip with baby! What kind of disinfecting wipes do you use?
Thanks so much for this post! I am traveling to Spain in less than two months with my 8 mth old! I have never traveled alone with a baby. Iβm going to takes notes on what you said for sure! One question – I love the idea of the noise canceling headphones, but I canβt imagine my little one keeping them on or being comfortable with them on while sleeping. Any more info on that?
Each part of your 50 steps was really very important to take our recent family travel with my 1.5 years old baby. I got this wonderful post to search on Google. I thank “Google” for it. Anyways, Your article was 100% helpful post for me online. So Informative Article! Thanks for spending Your time to guide new parents as me. β¦ π

This post was so helpful to me when I first started traveling with my baby, and helped me come up with some tips of my own: http://www.thefarandnear.com/blog/2017/2/27/have-baby-will-travel

Thanks for this post! I’m a father to be who will need to travel a lot and my wife is a tad bit overwhelmed by it all, so I will definitely want to reassure her that everything will be alright….
Super helpful tips! I will be travelling with my 5 or 6 week old to spain (he or she hasn’t arrived yet) so I am trying to get as much info as possible. What is the yellow carrier you use??
Lisa! That is so exciting….we took our son to Spain for his 1st birthday π
Maybe some of these tips are also helpful to you: http://www.thefarandnear.com/blog/2017/2/27/have-baby-will-travel
Happy travels!

it’s a solly baby wrap.
Love the tips! Also, what brand is that tribal one piece bathing suit?!
Really helpful tips for travel with the baby. I have to travel most time with my newborn baby. It’s really helpful.https://www.babescare.com/infant-car-seat-travel-bag/
I’ve been traveling with my baby since she was six weeks old and many of these tips were super helpful – thanks! I looked through shopping your looks but didn’t see where you got the red hat featured here: where is it from? I love it!
Very helpful Article. Thanks so much! I’m trying to search more about travelling with my baby as it’ll be our first long haul flight next week. Thanks for this again.
best tactical backpack.
This post is so immensely helpful! I am curious how you’ve bathed your babies while traveling? I will be traveling with a 6 month old that can’t quite sit on her own yet but the idea of using a hotel sink grosses me out haha.
Kristin, have you heard of the Puj Flyte tub? That’s what we used for our son!
There are more tips for travel with baby in my post: http://www.thefarandnear.com/blog/2017/2/27/have-baby-will-travel
Hope it’s helpful!

Hi Amber! This article will be super helpful as we travel with our 3 month old in September! One question, how do you travel with the car seat base? Check it at the gate with car seat and stroller? Thanks!
QUESTION: do you take the car seat base with you when traveling abroad? I don’t see a way to strap the seat in without a base but I’m a newbie!
No, we don’t take the bases with us when we travel. I know some carseats only work with the base so just make sure it can be installed properly without. Sometimes I would roll up a towel or something and use that. Hope that helps!
The airline I’m taking has the bassinet where the bulkhead is (the very first row of the middle section where there are 4 seats in a row) so I have to stow everything in the overhead vs under the seat in front of me. Would you recommend getting seats by the window over those or would having the bassinet be a better advantage than having a window?
Long ago parents had to face many problems traveling with newborns. But now everything has changed. Traveling with newborns is like traveling with a grown up kid with if you own a stroller. Strollers are easy to use, lightweight and can be settled in any small corner. So parents grab a stroller and travel the world with your baby. Some info here: http://babygirlstrollers.myfreesites.net
Super helpful and a good read. Thanks
I know exactly how you feel my daughter is 3 in a couple of months and my son is 7months and i havent had a adult conversation is such a long time and even when someone calls I can’t stay on the phone for long. It helps when u have someone to talk to that know exactly u feel or even set up play date so u can have some time out of the house n have someone to talk to.https://babyishcare.com/best-baby-thermometers/
I love this! the best tips! I have traveled with my baby in the car and in US, but this is super helpful when I am getting ready to fly to 3 different countries next week. Thank you for being so detailed in your posts! I learned a lot of new stuff and can’t wait to spend some time in Paris! ps we now always use air bnb. We had an amazing time using it so far in New York city and where ever we go the options are so great!
I love this post and return to it before all my trips with baby! My daughter is now one and we will be traveling to France in two months (14 months old). We are lucky to be flying business class (lie-flat seats) and she has a seat. I am wondering what you would do in that scenario… would you bring a car seat for her, or use a harness (like the CARES one) so she can lie flat? Trying to decide whether to bring a car seat at all or if we should rent one from the car rental company. Would love your advice!!
Hi! I don’t know what Amber would say, but I am decided on not taking a car seat with us anymore. Its become more of a hassle, especially after 6 months old. We tend to just use public transport, especially if you are in paris!!! There are so many more easy options then having to rent a car, most public transport will get you to different parts of France without needing a car. In a few times I needed Uber or taxi, I just strapped baby into the carrier and put a seat belt on myself. It worked out great and allowed for me to not worry about it.
We will be brining our 6 months old to Paris in June. When are you going?
We are going to be at a house in Provence, so unfortunately will need a car/car seat. But we could rent the car seat with the car. We are going in June as well. Have a great trip!!
I really love your post. Thank you. I’m travelling with my 9months old baby. Our departure would be 1am then I have 3hours lay over. I am bit worried with the 3 hours lay over. Do i need a stroller just for the 3hours lay over? and when you travel aside for the nappy bag you have another carry on luggage??? which is easier backpack or rolling bag??? I am really scared for this travel. First time and my baby cries really loud.
Loved it!!!!
Really very helpful tips when travelling with babies. Thank you for sharing it.
https://www.rehlat.com.eg/en/
Amazing tips!! Thank you!
I have secured a bassinet for our upcoming trip to Europe. When I put her in it does it needs sheets etc?
We are planning on using baby gravel for our almost 10 month old any experience with that?
And lastly she is now on formula…any tips or tricks for dealing with that on plane? Thanks!!
Amazing tips! We are going to Costa Rica in a few weeks and wanted to see if you have tips for a toddler vs baby. My babe will be 16 months when we go and does not want to stay seated and must explore everything on her little walking legs π Any tips to keep her entertained would be wonderful!
This is great! I’m flying without my husband for the first time next month with our 4 month old and I’m terrified. Is it helpful to bring the travel system? We have a graco one and I’m not sure if it’s better to just carry baby and have diaper bag and checked bag only. The stress is real!
Is it difficult to find diapers abroad? Will be in Beijing for 3 weeks with our 19 month old and am stressing out about diapers. I don’t want to have to pack a whole suitcase just for diapers. π©
Great questions! We always pack enough for the flight and a day or 2 for emergencies. But on long trips, packing all your diapers takes up way too much space!I’m not able to speak about China, but we’ve always had good luck finding diapers, and also brand name like pampers or huggies etc. In japan we couldn’t find any diapers that weren’t in pull-up style. Just have “diapers” plugged into google translate when you visit a drug store. I know you’ll do fine:) good luck and have a great trip!
This is so useful! I’m flying alone with my daughter from San Francisco to New Delhi this summer (she will be 6 months at that point).
Question: How do you use the bathroom on the plane? I will most likely have a bassinet – is it okay to leave her there by herself (asleep or awake)?
Do you put your stroller in a bag when you gate check/check it? If so, what kind? I flew for the first time with my 5 month old a couple weeks ago and my stroller came back trashed. I had it in a bag, but it was just a thin gate check one that ripped and didn’t do any good. I’m flying again next week and am desperately searching for something to protect it. Any tips?
Loved this article soooo helpful. We’re planning a cruise to Alaska, our little one will be 3-4months old. Since it’s a cruise there are only showers in the cabins and small sinks. Any suggestions for bath time? Also what did you do for diaper cream in a carry on?
I am so happy to hear they were helpful!! Your upcoming cruise sounds so fun! And we have never been on a cruise with our kiddos, that is definitely tricky about bath time. If the shower head is removable maybe washing off your baby in the shower or doing a sponge bath. Also, Aveeno baby has travel size diaper creams which is our favorite kind!
I appreciate your honesty, and agreed with everything, it seemed very logical. Thanks for writing this article is very helpful! I’m amazed with your amount of traveling way to grab the bull by the horns , so to speak. Also nice pics. Thanks again.
I loved these tips! I will be traveling quite a bit after baby is born and it’s nice to know that it will be do-able! Also the pictures were so sweet! I would love to know where you got your swimsuit!!
loved it
Loved this blog! I recently made a YouTube video vlogging my experience! See link below to watch!

Absolutely loved reading this post. You have so many good/useful tips! I just booked a trip, a cruise in the Mediterranean, and by the time we go my son will be 1 and a half years old. I haven’t traveled with him yet so I’m excited and nervous! Now you just need to post some tips for older babies too haha! xoxo
I am so happy to hear that!! Yay! Good luck on your cruise! And yes! I totally need an updated version with two kids now too π
Saw your point 33 on swaddling thought of sharing what I read from this post. It was how I found your blog anyways. http://babytransports.com/how-to-swaddle-a-newborn/
Oh awesome!! Thank you! Glad you found my blog π
Thank you for this post Amber! My family will be traveling to Costa Rica this next Christmas and our baby will be 8 months by the time we go, so I am holding onto this post for safe-keeping. I love your practical tips. It will be helpful for our flights to and from Texas anyway. Reading this has already been so helpful <3
Thanks for your suggestions. Will be traveling to Costa Rica with our 4 month old at the end of the month. Question for you- where did you get your colourful stripped one piece swim suit from the picture?? Love it
Thank you for taking the time to write this! I’m traveling cross country alone next wknd with my 4 mo old boy and have been nervous and had so many unanswered questions till I read this! Thank you thank you !!!
This is great information. Thank you for sharing. I travel from NYC to Geneva 2 times a year with my now 2.5 year old boy and 10 month old daughter, as my parents live there. I would love it if you could share your jet lag techniques. My older one was always easy, but my second is struggling a lot. And of course waking my older at night. Starting to feel like I might stop visiting till she is older as the last two trips have been very changing and I feel like as soon as we are good to go it’s time to go home and I’ve aged 10 years. Lol Thanks so much!!
Super helpful. Thanks!

This article was so helpful and motivating to travel with my little one, especially internationally. I’m getting ready for my first trip and hope it’s the first of many flights. Thank you
Hi, very good site. I have site in the same niche, but i have to work on it to be the same quality as yours.
Keep up good work. http://www.babytransports.com
Hi Amber, what soundmachine do you use?
After reading all your tips I feel a little more at ease about traveling with my bambino. I did want to ask you, did your baby have to get any additional vaccines to travel? I feel that you’re the perfect person to ask. Lol
Thanks for all the tips! Super helpful! One thing I’m nervous about is bringing my nice stroller/car seat. I’m afraid of checking them at the gate and then getting tossed around and possibly broken or messed up! Have you ever experienced this? Is it worth buying a cheap car seat or stroller to use just for traveling? Thanks!
Amber,
Wow thank you for such a detailed and helpful post! The question I have for you is about a travel highchair. Did you travel with one? My little girl is 6 months old and is eating solids. I’m trying to find a good highchair that doesn’t take up much space in the suitcase. Thanks!
I loved all the tips were also fun, all true and helpful .
greetings.
THANX!
Thanks a lot this post is very helpful for those moms who will travel with babies.
Thanks for this post! When you’re in a city like Paris, do you still rent a car or rely on public transport? How about cabs or Ubers? Driving in Paris seems a bit scary but I’m thinking that you’d need to bring your own car seats for cabs or an Uber, correct? Thanks again!
Love this post..thanks for the tips. What color Solly Wrap is this beautiful yellow?
This post was great and i love how free spirited you are.
How about home made baby food when traveling, do they let you have it? And the drinks have to be unopened?
Thank you so much for writing this. I will be traveling with my LO for the first time and I’m just so nervous. I’m concerned for his ears and weather people will be tolerant of him if he cries. In reading your post I found comfort although I am still quite nervous. You have so many great tips in here and I hope to remeber all of them for our trip.
I am so glad you found this post helpful! You will do great! π
Me and my wife definitely needed this one as we travel every now and then. Thank you for this great post! http://thebabyguides.com/
we are traveling with our 8 month old twins to Hawaii this month. Thanks for these tips, they are helpful. We live in California so the one thing that is making me anxious is the 3 hour time difference (they are finally on a good sleeping schedule). any other suggestions other then what I already read here? thanks much
I am so happy to hear that! Have a great trip!! You will do great!! π
Wow, all of these were extremely helpful. I havent had a chance to travel with my little one yet will be soon. I will keep in mind all of the suggestions. I was very worried on how to deal with flying with a tiny one, keeping them entertained, other passengers, trying to carry everything plus him, etc. Ty very much for the insight.
I am so glad you found it helpful π Thanks for the comment!! xo
hi Amber!
we recently traveled for the first time with our little guy (he was 5 months at the time) and your post was super helpful! so glad we found it! love your family such an inspiration! you mentioned on snap that you might do a post on how you guys plan your travels and research for it so it’s economical and i was wondering if you had any updates on that π hope you guys get to do it I’m sure it would be super helpful as well!
all the best!
Mariel
This was SO helpful!! But where did you get that amazingly beautiful swimsuit from?!
how old was Atticus when he took his first flight? My parents live in nyc and can;t travel to visit their first grandbaby in SF when he/she is born in Dec. They are asking me to fly there with the baby but i am terrified of flying right after delivery (within the first 8-10 weeks).
He did good!! He was still so little, around 6 weeks I think? But because he was a newborn, he honestly slept most of the way. Do what you are comfortable with, but just know, it is will be easier than you think π I was definitely nervous taking Atticus on his first flight as a new baby and my first baby but it went great.
Are you updating this soon? Taking my daughter to Denmark and Czech Republic on December when shes three..so i need toddler advice!
We are hoping to do a post soon about traveling with a toddler π so stay tuned for it!!
Hi amber! I’m too young to have kids but could you email me a pic of your nursery???
I love this! Thank you for the advice. We are traveling to Mexico with our 6-month old in a few weeks. Any suggestions on a small, flexible cooler that will hold breast milk for the day? Also, when traveling internationally have you always had luck finding good diapers and baby food?
Thanks so much Sarah!! I am so glad to hear that it was helpful. And I would check Amazon for sure, that is always our go-to!! We just have a little zip one but I don’t remember where from π
just love it!!! its so helpful! I traveled ( 10 hours flight) with my 3 months old and it was a piece of cake, since all he did was sleep and eat and luckly the bassinet was available and I could have both arms a break. π Now he is 10 month old and we are going to Paris (12 hours) and there is no bassinet available because of his wheith…:/ don’t know what to do about his sleep. Do you think its possible to find an empty seat and put on a pillow or something for him to sleep? ( I am sorry about the mispeling , I am from Brazil)
Just read this post after seeing it tagged in your travelling with 2 babies post. Really useful for our upcoming first family holiday with our 6 month old. We have a night flight at 10pm, baby is usually fed and asleep by 7. Do you suggest we feed him (bedtimw bottle) at home before we leave & then put him into carseat for feed him as we arrive at the airport? Xx
Amber,
I still send this post to every friend who asks me how I learned to travel with my baby (who’s 16 months old now, but started flying with him around 4 months) and I still love going back and catching more tips every time I read it! You’re the best, doll!

Thank you so much Ashley!! I love hearing that π Thanks for the feedback and sharing the post. xoxo
Hey Amber! Thanks for the tips. We are traveling to the Caribbean in April and my daughter will be 4 months old. We are staying on a resort. Would you recommend bringing a car seat? I have heard there are no car seat laws there and sometimes the vehicles don’t even have seat belts! Obviously I want to bring it for safety, but she will be on our laps on the plane and the only other time we will need it is to and from the airport to resort … And if we may not even be able to use it I don’t want to lug it all around?! Also do you use sunscreen on them when less than 6 months?? Heard somewhere that was a no-no?!
Hi Amber! This is so helpful as I prepare to travel with my 4 week old. I have a few questions re: baby and travel. I tried to contact you via the Contact button on the website but it won’t go through. Is there another way I can reach you? Thanks!! π
I am so glad you found it helpful, good luck on your trip!! And my email is [email protected] π Thanks!
thank you! great advice! also, where on earth did you get that rockin swimsuit – I love it!
I am so glad you liked the post!! π Thank you!! And the swimsuit is Nanette Lepore! xo
http://amberfillerup.com/2015/03/last-of-jamaica/
Hi Amber- this post is absolutely amazing and really opened up my eyes. My husband and I (kidless) love to travel (well, I love it most and he comes lol). In the last few years we’ve been to Canada, Thailand and Iceland- were from Utah- most people say when we have kids we won’t do that anymore blah blah blah. What are your thoughts on traveling international with a baby less than 3 months old (would love to plan our first trip while I’m off for maternity leave)? How old is Atticus in the picture with the sheep? Whoever takes your pictures does an incredible job! π
Hi Sierra, I am so glad you liked the post!! That makes me so happy to hear! And wow! You have been some amazing places, how cool! And I think Atticus was around that age for his first trip to Europe!! So I would say it is definitely doable, and to go for it. Oh and my husband David takes the majority of my pictures, I will pass that compliment along π xo
This was a huge help- taking our two month old to Jamaica next month and it will be our first family trip and his first flight! Thank u!
Awesome!! So glad to hear that π Have a great trip!!
Hi Amber! Love this post, such great suggestions! We have travelled quite a bit with our little guy, and have an upcoming trip to Europe. I would love to stay in a rental (homeaway) vs. hotel. I’m wondering if there is a way to find places to rent with a crib? Or did you travel with a travel crib? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much Allie!! I am so happy to hear that!! π And you can definitely find Homeaway places and hotels with a crib! You can contact the owner and see if they have one and to have one put in your room beforehand. Most hotels we have stayed at had cribs on site and brought one to our room. Homeaways may be a bit more tricky but my best suggestion is to contact the owner and find out before booking. Good luck!! Have a blast! xo
Loved the post! So informational. My baby was travelling internationally quite a lot while I was still pregnant of her. Now that she is almost 3 months old we have already started planning our vacation trips. we are taking het to Mexico in the beginning of March, which should be easy to manage since it is just a 4h flight and my husband will be with us but I got us a ticket to Brazil and it will be just me and her when she will be 6 months. I will take the moby wrap with me for sure but I am still hesitant on how in the earth I will be able to go to the washroom when travelling on my own. Any tips?
Yay! I am so glad to hear this π You will do so awesome!! Sounds like you have some amazing trips planned! And yes! That is tricky.. If you bring your stroller to the gate, you can take her into a large stall (handicap stall) with you. As far going to the restroom on the plane, I would kindly ask someone next to you to keep on eye on the baby. Hopefully you will have your carseat so they don’t need to hold her or anything if that makes sense?!
May i ask which sound machine you use?
Of course!! http://www.amazon.com/HoMedics-SS-2000G-Relaxation-Machine-Nature/dp/B00A2JBMRE
amazing strollers!! loved really and also i like thta pictures
Thank you!!
Thank you for interesting advice. You look great with your family. If u are going in new city or even in you country with a baby, try to do as much as possible at home, when you are sitting on a couch. It can save you a lot of nerves in your travelling. Book all you can in advance. Create trip map via http://well-way.com to understand all your routes.
Of course!! I hope it was helpful.
I have two questions about travelling I can’t seem to find anyone talking about. 1. What ID/paperwork is needed for the baby for just travelling within the US? 2. When you’re getting to the airport, do you take a taxi? If so, do you buckle his car seat in? If you drive, do you have your husband drop you off while he parks?
I am so sorry I am just seeing this!! But the baby only needs a passport if he/she is going out of the country. And if we rent a car, David will drop me and the kids off and he will go drop it off. But we also use taxis or Uber as well.
I remembered reading this post before my daughter was born and now that she’s here I came back for a refresher. So many good tips! We’re planning on visiting New York this fall. Hopefully you hold baby girl in so we can maybe spot you strolling around one of your favorite spots π Well anyway, I had a question about take off and when their ears pop…how do you help with that? It’ll be her first time on a plane and I want to avoid the stares from people if she wakes up startled. She’ll be around 5 or 6 months by the time of the trip. Thanks in advance!
I am so glad you liked this post!! π And I realize I am so late to responding to this haha but I hope you had a great trip to NY!! π And as far as baby’s ears popping, breastfeeding them at take off and landing can help with that. xoxo
love it!!
im traveling with my 8 month old daughter for the first time and this is a huge help!!
Yay!! So glad you liked this.
I just stumbled across your blog when I was looking for tips on traveling with a baby (we have a 15-month-old son) and this was hugely helpful on our first flight with him! Thanks so much for all the great tips!
I am so happy to hear that! Thanks so much for reading!! xo
So from what I read, it seems like you take him as a lap passenger unless there happens to be an empty seat. This is the main thing concerning me. My son is 11 mos old and sooooo wiggly. My husband thinks it will be super easy to keep him still in our laps, but I think it will be impossible without a lot of crying. I like the suggestions about kneeling in the floor, isle walking…., but do you think it’s worth it for him to have his own seat? Also, car seat base and car seat, stroller- we are only traveling domestically this time. We have a large jogging stroller. Do you happen to know anything about taking/ checking those at the gate? Would it be better to take just the car seat and buy an umbrella stroller? I’ve also seen a coue of posts abounding able to rent a car seat. Any experience with that?
I’ll immediately grab your rss as I can not to find your email subscription link or e-newsletter service.
Do you have any? Kindly let me realize so that I may just
subscribe. Thanks.
Thank you for this! Traveling with my 7 month old to NYC alone for the first time this weekend and this makes me feel a bit better/more prepared. π
You are so welcome!! So glad you liked this post π
Great info! My husband I plan to continue traveling once we have kids and all the info you provides is fantastic. Out of curiosity, did you ever travel to a country that you felt wasn’t safe for a baby?
Thanks for the tips! Leaving to texas from seattle on the 15th with a 3+ hour layover at LAX bringing us to a travel day of 12 hours! A 9 year old son and my 10 month old daughter will be with me… Im terrified. Praying for an empty seat, patient passengers, and keeping my sanity.
I’m getting ready to fly with my almost 1 yro, Sawyer, in a few weeks and it’ll be just the two of us! I remembered seeing you post on IG that you’ve blogged about travel tips. So glad I found it. Fantastic information!
I tried to read through the comments so if someone has asked and I missed a question regarding mine then my apologies. When you’re traveling alone do you purchase a separate seat for Atticus but then hold him on your lap a lot just for comfort, etc., or do you skip the seat and hold him in your lap?
Thank you very much!
Are you traveling with just your hubby or are you bringing a grandparent/nanny along?
It all depends. I have done all of the above. I prefer to have David along with me π
Did you use any type of cover or protector for your car seat/stroller when you had to check it at the gate? My mom use to work for the airlines and she said they are kind of rough with those things…. the last thing I need is my stroller or car seat getting damaged lol
Thanks for this. Such great advices. Have you tried the Babyzen Yoyo stroller you can bring on the airplane? thinking about buying this for our trip to LA/San Francisco. My little babe is 14 months but tiny so guessing the stroller would be big enough:-) Have you made a clothes for baby essential of what you bring for you little guy? A hi from a Dane living in Sweden:-) – Louise
Can you go in to more detail
About jet lag now that A is older?
hi!! thanks a lot for this tips!!!i love travel, i live in france but i’m spaniard and in 3 weeks i’m taking the plane alone with my 3months baby boy so i had a lot of questions =P
I try to be as natural as possible in my life so i like all the thigs you told…and first of all, no stress!!!! =)
Have a nice day and a great weekend!!!
Amazing!! Just what I have been searching for. This is so, so helpful to me Amber, thank you for taking the time to share your expertise. First flight with baby in 2 days, wish us luck!
Thank you for all of your travel tips with baby. So helpful for my daughter-in-law and son…and me (the grandmother) as our family (6 adults + 1 baby -7 mos) will be traveling this summer to Europe. It will be a fun and memorable time together. Staying flexible, and going with the flow. Appreciate your practical and tried-true advice. And…AMAZING…where you, Atticus, and David have traveled already in your baby’s young life! Love your pics as well!
Your swimmsuit is amazing! Unfortunately I couldn’t find any post related to this vacation, where you worn it. Could you tell me, where it comes from? Btw, you have a wonderful blog. I don’t have any kids yet, but i absolutely love your blog and your Atticus =))
Wow! Thank you for the helpful advice! My husband and I are traveling to Germnay for 12 days with our 3 yr old and 3 month old. Any suggestions for stollers? I have the uppababy vista and double Bob but figured they’d be too big for travel. I saw the Kinderwagon HOP accepts car seats and is an umbrella stroller. What have you seen others use for 2?
I love your list! I traveled a lot before having my baby in 2013 and like you I said I definitely wanted to travel abroad with my son. Then my son was born and he was super colicky for the first 10 months or so. He would scream every single time we put him in the car seat and hated to be strapped in the stroller. It got better after around 10 mo old but he still had many moments. He’s 2 yrs old now and we have been on about 7 round trip flights across the country but haven’t traveled abroad yet. Now he’s just a super active boy that doesn’t sit still which is pretty normal now lol. I really couldn’t have traveled without either my husband or my mom being with me that’s for sure! Love you IG and blog!!! And love your style π
Same does for red eye flights?
Now that A is older and eating solids, what do you do for a high chair when you travel?
Hi!!
Thank you so much for this post! It is so useful!I will travel with my 3 month old from Singapore to Chile and then to France and I was so worried, but after read all your tips I feel relaxed and optimist.
Through your post I discovered the jujube bff bag and the noise canceling headphones and bought it both! Lol!
Cheers!
Denisse
This is seriously the best and most comprehensive list I have seen for traveling with a baby!! I hope you do one about traveling with a toddler in a year or so;)
Thank you so much Kelsey!! I appreciate the positive feedback π xoxo
Traveling with a baby is easy. Wait until you have a toddler. Different story!
So so true!! Now we know π
This post was an absolute life saver !! Traveling with my 6 month old next week and this answered all of my questions I was worried about !! Love your blog and your gram !
This is a super helpful list. I am contemplating flying to see family in Utah when my son will be 12 weeks and I am so nervous to actually buy the ticket because coming home it will just be two of us. One question, if you are wearing the baby why not check the infant carrier and stroller at bag check instead of at the gate? Thanks for this list!!!! We will see how brave I am haha…
True, above amber mentioned such amazing tips for mothers who want to travel with a little baby. Traveling by private jet is also another good thing, it provides more security and safety.
Loved this blog! Very helpful to get insight from someone who has traveled a lot. My baby Luciana is almost 9 months and we are going to be traveling Chile and Bolivia and wasn’t sure how to plan certain things out.Thank You!
These are very good tips (from someone with obviously lots of experience flying with a little one.) I have only flown 6 times with my son: at 3 months, 14 months and 15 months. The 3 months was a breeze, bc the flight was only an hour and he was still nursing and not mobile. The later flights were much harder, bc he was mobile and too alert to make sleeping on the plane easy. But from my experiences, I have a couple suggestions to add:
Regarding boarding early: if your flight is over an hour and your child is older and mobile, AND you’re not travelling alone, send hubby on the plane early with all the gear, then wait until the last minute for you and baby to board. Boarding can take 20+ minutes, and any time you can save from being cooped on the plane helps.
Regarding avoiding the back of the plane: guess it could depends on the type of plane, but we’ve found that being closer to the engines helps drown out the baby noise and makes it quieter for the rest of the plane, and families actually tend to go to the back of the plane and then you’re all in the same boat, with more understanding people, and less likely to get the glares that don’t help.
But this is a very thorough list, well done.

This is the sweetest post! I love how you have traveling with your little man down to an art, and you’re so positive! I love that. My significant other and I are from different countries and we fly a lot visiting each other and family. We don’t have a baby yet but I am keeping this handy because its so helpful!! You are amazing and you inspire me with loving attitude towards life. Thanks, Amber!
Aww thank you!! That really is so sweet of you! Definitely save this for a future read π Thanks so much for taking the time to read my blog!! I appreciate the love and support!! xo
This is amazing. Thank you so much for posting. I can’t wait to use all of your tips with our little one on the way! We definitely look at it as having an extra adventure partner to travel and experience life with. So excited! Thank u!!
Aww thank you Danielle!! I am so happy you found it helpful. I agree, it is so fun to have an extra travel buddy!! I can’t wait to look back at the memories too π Congrats on your little one coming!! How exciting yay!! XO
Loved your post! We travel a ton as well, based in Dubai, family in the states ect I wanted to tell you though, when booking your ticket (for international) request a “bulk head seat” or ask to be moved to this seat once you check in. This is the seat in between first/business and economy/economy plus, depending on which airline you are flying. These are where the bassinets are! Complete life saver, my little is technically too big for one now, 15 months, but we ask for one anyways to put all the extra junk and possibly slip him in! Just FYI! Also, if you have a choice fly Emerites, so baby friendly! They give you food, blankets, toys ect amazing!
Never thought that moving abroad with baby is so excited! These are really helpful tips! Oh, love your blog! Greetings, Man With Van Kennington Ltd.
Thank you so much Amy!! I am glad you found them helpful π And you are moving abroad?! How exciting!! xo
This is seriously one the best blog posts/articles I have ever read. I cam across this via Pinterest after searching for baby travel. My husband and I are in the talks about starting to try having a baby and one thing that was putting my want to be a mommy on hold, was the travel. We travel A LOT for work and I have heard so many nightmare stories about traveling with babies. After reading this I feel so much better knowing that it can be done. This is seriously an AMAZING post for both new and veteran moms, or even people thinking of having a kid! I love that you also include what items you personally recommend. There are so many things I would never even think to buy. Thanks sooo much for taking what probably took a lot of time to write such an in-depth, informative post!
Great tips! Can I offer a suggestion? With as much as you travel, you should look into getting a Sit n’ Stroll. It’s a car seat, stroller, and FAA approved seat all in one. I used to travel a lot with my little one when I traveled for work and it was a life saver. Seriously… It’s great. Love your posts and thank you. π
Thanks so much!! I am glad you liked them! And that is a great suggestion!! I have heard great things about them! I will look into it π Thanks for reading Cindy!! xo
Wow.. this is offically bookmarked for the future! Thanks for all the amazing tips!
http://urbanombre.blogspot.com/
Aww I am so glad!! Thank you for reading!! xo
Amber do you ever post anything I don’t like? Nope, you don’t :)! Not only is this post great, but the pictures are so beautiful! My parents weren’t able to take me travelling when I was growing up and I really want to be able to show Carter the world! It’s so awesome that Atticus will be able to have these memories and be able to look back at the beautiful pictures! We’re taking Carter on his first trip in November to Florida (he’ll be 13 months). I’m a bit nervous how it will go. How old is Atticus now? You might have to give me some advice a little closer to November too lol! Thanks for sharing about the water on the plane btw! Definitely something I would not have even thought about! What is your next trip you have planned?! Love seeing all of your adventures! Not sure if you already have one, but if not could you maybe do a “blog tips post”? I’m fairly new to it and would love your advice/input :)!
Thanks for another awesome read!

Oh my goodness you are too sweet!! Thank you love!! Your comment made my day! I can’t wait to look back at all our memories traveling as a family once Atticus is older. And YAY how fun to go to Florida!! Sounds like it will be a great trip for fall!! I bet your little man will do so great! Atticus is 10 months tomorrow!! He’s growing up so fast π We are planning on going somewhere this summer!! I try to keep it the destinations a surprise π So stay tuned!! If you send me an email, I will share some blog tips with you!! Thanks again for your comment, I loved it!! XOXO
I have been avoiding airplane travel with my 2 year old, but this gives me hope! I’ve always been so worried people would hate me for bringing the crying child. Here’s to hoping my experiences will mirror yours!
tifa
I know what you mean!! I thought the same thing!! And it is still stressful if Atticus is crying on a plane because I feel like everyone is mad π But I am sure people don’t care as much as we think they do!! You got this!! π xo
thank you so much for posting this! i’m 18 days from taking my 3 month old to go to few countries in south america and this is so useful! and helps me feel confident about bringing him.
YAY!! I am so happy I could be of some help!! I am so excited for you!! I hope everything goes smoothly for you love!! Have a blast!! xo
I love these travel tips! You make it seem so easy. I dread going to the supermarket. I really need to start stepping out of my comfort zone π
Thank you so much!! And I may make it “look” easy, but believe me, I still find it hard at times!! It is so worth it though π Thanks for reading!! xo
I’m not a mom and don’t plan to be, yet I read the whole list because it was interesting! π One thing… I have to sleep w/white noise myself, and I have apps on my iPhone and iPad that have a ton of choices of sounds, w/out having to bring a fan or other machine when I travel.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read and comment anyway!! I appreciate it π And ahh apps are the best aren’t they?!! Makes it so easy to have it all! Thanks Lisa! xo
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I don’t have a little one yet, but when the time comes – I plan on traveling with my baby! Seeing all of your pictures with Atticus in different countries and vacations I always wondered how you did it! But seriously, this is so helpful! When the day does come and I am able to travel with my baby – I will definitely be reading these tips again! Love all of the pictures of you and Atticus – seriously so cute!
Xoxo, Kalyn Goff
I am glad you liked the tips!! I hope they help down the road when you have a little one of your own!! It is so fun to travel with Atticus but it is no easy feat haha π Thanks again for the positive feedback!! You’re the best!! xo
I don’t even have a baby (or even close to having one) and I just read this whole article…..haha. What can I say Amber I find your writing style very interesting and entertaining π
Thanks for reading anyway!! And I am not sure if that is bad or good.. haha π
This was an amazing post. I’ve been wondering what your secrets are! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Thank you so much Julie!! I appreciate the positive feedback π xo
1. Not very ecological to throw clothes away insted of washing them.
2. Most Countries already know that a bumper isn’t good in a crib.
The rest is top
Thanks for your feedback!!
I know that it’s not the most ecological thing to throw away a onesie, but I can tell you from experience that the amount of water and oxyclean that I had to use to clean a onesie far surpassed the waste that just throwing it away would be. My baby had some BAD blowouts and if I ever wanted that onesie to resemble white again it would take a lot to get it that way! Just my experience.
Also, they make breathable bumpers now which are safe and made of mesh. Target sells them. They aren’t the traditional bumpers that can pose a suffocation risk. I believe these are the ones Amber uses.
I don’t have a baby yet, but when I do I will be consulting this, first thing! It is so detailed–amazing!
http://www.qustomquinns.com/blog
I am so happy to hear that!! This is for future moms too π Thanks for reading!! xo
Seriously, so amazing that you travel so much! I’m sure you’ve made some amazing memories, and it’s so cool to think that Atticus has been to SO many place and he’s not even a year old yet! That will be a perfect “What’s one random fact about you” answer when he gets older hahaha.
StyledByBlondie.com
Aww thank you for that!! I love the memories we have created and look forward to MANY more! And omg that’s so true haha he will be set for that day!! So funny!! Thanks for reading love!! xo
Amazing post! So many good tips and information. I’m impressed that you guys have been able to travel so much and it is lovely how much effort you put into including Atticus in everything.
http://www.DressesAndDenim.com
Thank you Carly!! Your words are so sweet!! I can’t imagine not having Atticus with us on our trips!! It’s the best to be together π I appreciate your comment!! Love ya! xo
These were great tips! Don’t feel sad that you’ve never gotten the bassinet. We got one when we flew to England for my sister’s wedding and it actually turned into a curse for us. We got our 7 month old down at his bedtime, everything was perfect, 30 minutes later there was a tiny bit of turbulence and they made us take him out. He NEVER went back to sleep. I wish we had just slept him in in the carrier, then he would have gotten a decent stretch of sleep at least. #13 is my favorite. It really is all about mindset!
Ahh thank you!! That means so much to me!! I appreciate it π And OH NOO!! Ugh, turbulence is the worst!! I guess it’s good as long as it’s a smooth flight, and there’s no way to know!! And I agree, with a positive mindset, anything is possible!! Thanks for sharing your insight Lauren!! xoxo
Thanks a lot for these very detailed tips! Most blogs tell you the basic obvious stuff but this is very useful. I am currently traveling with a 7 months old from France to the U.S. and I have to say it is totally doable although you need to make some adjustments in order to adapt to your baby’s schedule. We have brought our own baby formula since the brands are different abroad, we also brought a traveling bed which I highly recommend since it only weighs 5 pounds (Phil & ted’s). I also found that tablets for cold sterilization are a life saver!
You’re so welcome!! I glad you liked them!! I tried to share each and every detail, so I am happy to hear that π And wow go you!! You are amazing!! I agree, it is all about adapting!! Thanks for sharing your tips too!! I love it π xoxo
Great tips! Can you tell me what bumper you travel with? Looking for something that isn’t too bulky to pack! Thank you!
Thank you!! I am glad you thought so!! And I use plain white bumpers from Target!! I hope this helps!! xo
Thanks for answering my question! I wasn’t able to find anything on Target’s website besides the breathable bumpers, so I’ll just look next time I’m in the store. Appreciate it!
Loved this post! Currently in my 2nd trimester with our first baby, and will definitely use these tips in the future π
Thank you!! And wow congrats!! I hope the rest of pregnancy goes smoothly π xo
This is such a great post Amber! I have so many friends that don’t do anything now that they have had a baby and they definitely don’t ‘sell’ the experience of motherhood, which is a shame it should be amazing! You make it look so much fun and I love that you liken travelling with baby to travelling with your little buddy >> lucky bubba getting to go to some many cool places! xx
Thanks so much Chelsea!! I am glad you liked it! And aww that is so sweet of you!! Thank you for that kind compliment, I appreciate it so much! I agree, I think motherhood is something to enjoy and be proud of! I am so lucky to be a mama for sure π xo
Great post, Amber1 I have a 3 year old and a 3 month old and I could not agree more with everything you said. Keeping the little ones on their schedule and remembering they need to stretch their legs, too, is so crucial. And as always, you and Atticus take lovely pictures!
-Shayna
Thank you so much Shayna!! I am so happy you agree!! I love hearing feedback from other moms π Thanks for reading!! xo
Great post, Amber! I have a 3 year old and a 3 month old and I cannot agree more with every single thing you mentioned. Keep their schedule and remembering they need to stretch their legs, too, is so crucial. And as always, you and Atticus take lovely pictures π
Your pictures were gorgeous!

Thank you so much!! xo
Thank you so much for these awesome tips!! I’ll be traveling with my little guy at the end of this month and had so many worries and concerns. This definitely put a lot of those to ease. I am so excited for our trip now!

You’re so welcome!! I am happy you found them helpful!! You will do great with your little guy!! Have a great trip whenever you go!! xo
I like your advice. I have 12 and 14 year old sons and have traveled with them since they were little. My only issue is with your first tip… Throwing away the onesies is tremendously wasteful, especially if you travel a lot and do it often. Just take a gallon sized Ziploc bag and keep the soiled articles zipped in until you can wash them. Fabric is not meant to be disposable.
Thanks so much Nikki!! I love hearing from other moms! It sounds like your boys are accustomed to traveling, how awesome! And I understand what you mean about it being wasteful, thanks for your feedback. In my experience, I don’t like carrying around soiled onesies for a week or more (depending on the length of the trip) because a lot of times I won’t come across a washer and dryer, and will then have to bring them back home to wash.. But that’s just my opinion. I buy the onesies in a pack so they are cheap, so for me it’s logical. Thanks for reading!! xo
This is probably the BEST advice that I’ve ran across. Wish I would’ve seen it months ago!! Now I just need to find a good article on traveling with a toddler!!! Loved the pictures too!
Wow thank you so much!! I appreciate the positive feedback π And I will have to learn new tips for when Atticus is a toddler ahh crazy to think about haha π Thanks for reading!! xo
Amber, this post is amazing and one of the best! You’re amazing!
http://fabuloustorture.blogspot.com
Aww you are too kind!! Thank you Andrea!! xo
Love this post! Very helpful tips. I have only been on 1 flight with my baby (she was 3 months) and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be! Mindset is key!
I do have a question about what you do when you stay at a homeaway property without a crib–do you rent a crib? Bring a pack n play? Next trip I take we will probably do homeaway but not sure what we do about the crib situation. Thanks!
Thank you Christina!! I am so glad I could be of some help!! And I try to find out ahead of time if the property comes with a crib/available to rent, and a lot of times I won’t choose a place unless it does. Otherwise, you can definitely bring your pack-n-play, that works great as well π I hope that helps!! xoxo
I don’t have a baby and not really planning to have one, but i just read your whole post
Thank you for the post anyway!! I appreciate it! π
Did you get a chance to read my (apologies) mail? I’ve also sent a question for you. Hope you get the chance to read it. Have a lovely day.
Amber, you are truly an inspiration! I have told you this before that motivated me to get out more with my 9 month old son, Alexander. Recently, my husband and I took him to Central Park and took some great pictures. I was hoping to possibly catch you and Atticus there! Anyways, I will be flying alone with him to Florida in 2 weeks and I was hoping you would write this post. There are so many great tips, especially not to use the water in the plane. I never knew that. However, are you sure I can leave my baby in the Ergo going through security? The TSA website says you have to take the baby out of the carrier and walk him through. I hope I can leave him in the carrier cause it would make things so much easier but let me know. Thanks again!!
Thank you so much Adriana!! That means the world to me!! And aww I hope we run into each other sometime, do you live in NYC?! I bet your little guy is adorable!! Good luck on your flight to Florida, you will be a rockstar now!! And with the carrier, most of the time I was able to leave him in, but depending on the airport, some may be more strict on it than others?! I have lucked out and was able to leave him in π I hope that’s the case for you! Thanks for reading love!! xo
Thanks for responding as always! I love that you take the time out of your busy days to get back to everyone. I won’t be traveling through a strict airport so I am should be good to go with the Ergo. I do not live in the city but actually live in Long Island which is maybe 30-40 minutes away from the city. I love going to the city though but unfortunately, don’t know my way around but my husband does. We hope to go often with the baby this summer so running into you one day would be awesome! I was going to try to make your event last night at Dressbar and I am sorry I missed it. Will you be having another upcoming event? Thanks again!
Of course!! It’s so nice connecting with my readers, I love it π And okay good, I hope you can keep your little one in the Ergo then!! I don’t know of any upcoming events yet, but I am sure I will have something this summer! I would LOVE to meet you!! If you are ever in the city let me know! Tweet me or something π Let me know how your trip to Florida goes!! XOXO
Thanks for all the tips! I always dislike it when people say they can’t travel because they have a baby. I think it’s totally possible and seeing you do it totally confirms it! I’m expecting a boy in a couple of weeks and my husband and I are planning on traveling with him so these tips will come in handy soon! Thanks again!
You’re so welcome!! Thank you for reading!! And aww thanks so much! I agree, having a baby is no excuse, you can do anything!! Congrats to you soon-to-be mama!! So exciting π I hope everything goes smoothly!! XO
This is s great list! We also travel a lot and I don’t think you missed a thing! Another idea that we have done is put the pack n play in the closet if it was big enough at the hotel. Another way to stay dark and quiet.
Thank you!! I appreciate the positive feedback! You’re the best!! Oh that’s a great idea to put it in the closet!! I will have to remember that next time π Thanks love!!
Great post Amber! I don’t have kids, but I still really enjoyed reading this. Always nice to be prepared for the future though. π
http://aubryama.com
Thank you Aubry!! You can save it for a future read when you have a baby of your own π I am so happy you read it anyway!! I appreciate it!! xo
Ah thank you for this post! I love the website to rent apartments/houses. I absolutely can’t stand staying in a regular small hotel room with the floral bedspreads with kids. I have had the hardest time finding other options so that was an awesome tip! Definitely using it when we go to Florida.
You’re so welcome!! I am glad you liked it!! Homeaway is such a lifesaver and makes trips so much better and more comfortable π I hope you find a good place in Florida!! xo
LOVE this post!! I have a (almost 4 month old) son who I would love to make a world traveler!! I admit…I am one of those who is terrified to fly with a baby, but after reading this post I feel like I’m prepped and ready to go anywhere!! Hehe!
Thank you so much!! And YAY!! I am so happy to hear I could inspire someone!! Traveling is definitely not “easy” for anyone, but it helps to be prepared and have a positive mindset!! You can do it! xo
Thanks so much for this post! I commented on your Instagram a few weeks ago asking for a post like this. I imagine a lot of people have requested this, but I definitely appreciate it! We’ll be taking our little man to Florida in July (he’ll be 11 months). It’ll be our first flight with him so I am open to any and all suggestions! What sunscreen do you use on Atticus?
Thank you so much Nya!! I always take suggestions from others into consideration for future posts, so thank you for helping with that process!! I appreciate it π Good luck on your trip to Florida!! You will be great!! Have a blast!! And I always use 100 SPF sunscreen on Atticus π XO
Is there a particular brand you use? I got some from the Honest Company but it’s only SPF 30 and as we get into summer I definitely want something much stronger.
Oh sorry I meant to include that!! I use Color Science π I got it from my dermatologist. I hope that helps!!
Thanks so much!! Besides that your tips are awesome, it’s so great to know other people are thinking about the exact same things when they travel with their baby. I wouldn’t for example ever thought about putting a baby to sleep in the toilet but the idea is simply brilliant! You are so great!
You are so welcome!! I am so glad you liked the tips! And yes I agree, it is so nice to be able to relate to other moms because let’s be honest, I don’t think traveling is ever “easy” but it is nice to be prepared π Thanks for reading!! xo
Thanks for sharing! We are taking our 8 month old from Washington DC to My husband’s hometown in Ireland in three weeks and I’ve been apprehensive but seeing Atticus do so well has been helpful. For those concerned about crib bumpers, you can find breathable variations. My pediatrician said a half teaspoon of Benadryl is acceptable (my piglet is already 25 lbs) but suggests trying this at home first because some babies actually become hyper. We’ve discovered Enfamil isn’t available in Ireland so I’d suggest travelers check on their own formula type before heading out of Country. And I highly suggest introducing a security blanket or other item to baby and bringing it on the trip. My son is obsessed with this http://m.ralphlauren.com/product/index.jsp?productId=56621896&cp=12669527 and I ordered three in the event we ever lose one! Adorable photos! Ha, of course some of the photos on a blog are staged. Why is that a source of such criticism?! They’re beautiful and inspiring. A blog is a product in many aspects; advertising is glossy. I did really enjoy this post though… not corporately sponsored and with only the intent of being helpful to your readers. And I’m sure it took time to write, so thank you and keep on, Amber! X
I had one the hyper experiences with the Benadryl… It backfired on us on a flight and our then 9-month old son fought sleepiness desperately. It was the one flight we ever took with our boys that was awful. AWFUL.
Hi there! Love your blog and your lil man! Great tips, but I did have a question. You mentioned twice about bringing as many liquids as you want/need. Do you mean liquids that you purchase in the airport after going through security that you will then bring on the plane? With the security limits on fluids I was just curious! Especially with the cooler of breast milk. Any info would be much appreciated!!
Hi Elle!! Thanks so much for following along, I appreciate the love and support!! As far as the liquids, you can bring liquids through security if you have a baby. They will scan the bottles, but because a baby needs formula, breast milk, water or whatever, you are allowed to bring it through. I hope that helps answer your question. Thank you for your comment!! xo

Great advice! I give y’all props always traveling with a babe. Im a single mama of three- three and under so I’m guessing it wouldn’t be easy no matter what I tried. But I’m a total germaphob so I don’t think I would have your courage either way! Adorable pics as always. Such sweet memories for y’all to look back on!
God bless
Thank you Holly!! It definitely is no easy feat traveling with one baby, and I can’t imagine doing it with three kids under three!! Wow you have your hands full π Thanks for reading and for your sweet comment!! xo
Great tips! Very informative! Thank you!

so genuinely helpful!
Thank you so much!! π
breastfeeding without a cover for the win! I agree, if people are really trying to be discreet by using them they are failing miserably. And my babies hated them. π Also, yes yes yes to bathrooms and baby bedrooms. π
Seriously!! I find it way less obvious without a cover haha π And I am glad you agree!! Thanks for your comment Brooke!! XO
#8, #17 & #23 are the best!! This is a great list and one I wish I would have had before traveling (mostly by myself) with children. We have a very busy summer planned and I will be doing most of these things with my babes! Thanks for sharing! xx Ashleigh @SimplyWright
Ahh thank you!!! I love hearing feedback!! You are the best!! Thanks so much for taking the time to read π Enjoy your summer trips!! How fun!! xo
This post is so useful. The information is unreal! Adore it!
I did have a question for you. Would you be willing to share where you are at in the picture used on your instagram post where you are looking out of a balcony with baby A? Also, thank you so much for posting about HomeAway.com ! I want to travel but be comfortable! Please, could you share reliable places you have stayed at? I cannot wait to use this.
YAY!! I am so glad to hear that! Thanks so much!! And that picture was taken in Nice, France π The place we stayed at in Nice was through Airbnb, but I prefer HomeAway a lot more!! I will try to include reliable places to stay in my future posts for sure! Thanks for the suggestion!! xo
These are great tips!! Thank you for being so in depth! I am not planning any travel at the moment, but I will save this page for when the time comes π
xoxo, The Occasional Indulgence
Thank you so much!! I am so happy you liked the tips! I tried to put in as much detail as possible, so that is great to hear!! Definitely save it for a future read π Thanks again!! XOXO
Great tips! I can’t believe Atticus has been on so many flights and to so many places! He’s a lucky little boy for sure π It seems like our daughter has gotten worse on planes the older she’s gotten (she’s almost two). She was only five months old on a flight to Hawaii and it was by far our easiest flight! Now that she’s running around all over the place though she gets very bored on flights. I’m definitely bringing her iPad, toys, snacks and books on our next flight! Fingers crossed it will go well π
XO Kelly
http://www.dettecakes.com
Thank you Kelly!! I appreciate it! And I hear it’s much harder the older they get because they are able to walk, have a short attention span, etc. haha! So that totally makes sense!! I will be the one asking you for advice on what to do at that toddler stage! I bet you’re a pro by now!! Thanks for reading love!! xo
I just thought I should let you know, I’m nowhere even remotely close to even thinking about having a baby but for some reason this post was incredibly interesting! It is truly impressive how well thought out every single point is. I think it’s really really great that you wrote these all out to help people in what seems like one of the most stressful experiences a person could have. (And you are SO brave for traveling alone with such a young baby!)
Oh, and PS – that picture of Atticus in the Mickey Mouse ears just made my day! You’ve got one cute baby! π
Thank you so much Kacie!! I am so happy you gave it a read, and I appreciate the positive feedback for sure π And aww I love that picture too! Any baby in Mickey Mouse ears is just too dang cute!! Thanks for following along and for your kind words!! xo
These are super awesome Amber! Taking my baby girl to Belize was so much easier than I thought it would be because I was majorly stressing! We were in first class and the people were amazing! It seriously restored my faith in humanity with how kind everyone was to me. Customs was kind of a pain, but a learning experience for me! I will definitely keep these tips in mind next time I travel with her π I brought way too many diapers the last time haha! Thanks for taking the time to write all of these π
Rachel
Blonde with a Chanse
Thank you so much Rachel!! Wow Belize?!? You are a rockstar!! That is so awesome!! I agree about the learning experience, I learn something new about traveling with Atticus each time I go on a trip!! I either bring too many diapers or run out haha! It’s so hard to know how many π Thanks for reading!! xo
My husband and I will be traveling with our baby girl in a couple months and this was super helpful!! Thanks for sharing π
Yay!! I am so happy to hear this!! Thanks so much for leaving a comment π Good luck with your trip!! You will be great!! xo
Thank you for all these tips, this so helpful, i will do my first trip with my 2 month old boy to Portugal and i will aply a lot of these tips!

I am so happy to hear!! Thanks so much for reading π Good luck on your trip with your little one!! You will do awesome!! XO
Great list! Yes, as a former flight attendant, I wouldn’t dare drink the bathroom water. I also like to purchase the window and asile seats and hope the middle stays open. Another thing I love are packing cubes…specificity the ones eBags makes. They are my best friend when traveling. I have them in 2 colors. I put my things in one color and my son’s in another color.
Now that my kiddo is almost three somethings are easier and somethings are harder. Now it’s all about entertainment to get through a long flight. I bring the iPad–loaned with episodes of his favorite show. I bring a couple of his favorite books…but on the iPad I also have a few recordings of myself reading his favorite books. Music, snacks, coloring books, even Legos…as long as you plan ahead, you’ll survive! I always rent a car and try to rent the appartments like you do too. My husband and I are pros. But if/when we add a 2nd kid to this mix the whole system we’ve developed might explode. I guess we’ll cross that bridge one day. π
Thanks so much!! And ahh I am glad you can back up the bathroom water statement!! Ohh yes I need to start using packing cubes!! They seem so perfect at keeping everything compact!! Great idea. I am seriously going to have to get advice from you when Atticus is a toddler because holy crap it will change things up for sure!! I love all your tips!! Legos?! You’re a genius!! Thank you thank you!! You’re amazing!!! xoxo
Awesome post, thank you for all the tips, they will help me a lot in my first trip with the baby especially that I will be traveling international without my husband.
One question, do you have any tips on how to take your baby picture for their passport, my baby is 7 weeks and will be getting his passport on Monday.
Hi, I took a white sheet and covered my son’s bouncer then placed him in it. I took about 20 photos to finally get a good one and uploaded it to a free passport photo maker site. I found this site helpful http://sproutsenroute.com/infant-passport-photo-tutorial/ good luck!
Thank you Katie!
That is such awesome advice!! Thanks so much for sharing Katie!! π
Thank you so much!! I am so happy you liked the tips!! You will do great!! π And I loved what Katie said above, or you can go to Walgreens and they take passport photos too. Either way!! It may be easier to try it at home! xo
Amber, you are an amazing mama! Look at that list of places Atticus has been!! These tips are Great! I donβt have a baby yet, but I canβt wait to use these someday! As easy as it could probably be to get stressed out, I love that you just try to stay focused on your boy and make the experience as fun for him as possible! And that makes it such a fun bonding time for you two! You are awesome.

Thank you so much Angela!! That seriously means SO much to me!! I appreciate it π You can look back at these tips when you have a baby of your own!! Thanks again for the positive and kind words!! Love ya!! xo
Great tips! I live abroad and aldo travel a lot, now with a baby and a toddler! One quick tip I learned: if there is no bouncer you can make shift one with a towel. Just push the towel in and out the bars like weaving. It keeps baby from hurting himself and one less thing to pack. With more than one baby you can’t bring that much stuff with you. Also, disposable bibs are life saving too!
Thanks so much!! I am glad you liked them! And oh my gosh that’s such a good idea!! Love that! Thank you for sharing a few tips with me!! You sound like super mom!! Go you! xoxo
This is amazing, I’m pregnant and I’m planning to take my baby to my country when he is 3 months, wow this so helpful thank you
Awesome!! I am so happy to hear this!! Congrats on your pregnancy, so exciting π xo
I am traveling in about a month coast to coast with my baby boy for the first time and am so nervous about it! All these tips and tricks could not have come at a better time! Is it really true you can take as many liquids as you like? Do you get special treatment because of the baby?! Thanks so much for all the tips!! Love your blog!
Joanna
Awesome!! I am excited for you!! You will do great π I am happy I could be of some help!! And yes, you can take liquids because you have a baby!! It’s so nice!! You just say they are for the baby! Thanks for reading!! xo
I love this list! I have an 11 month old baby and we have been traveling with her since she was 5 months old. She has travelled with us abroad and domestically, and has done great! My parents always travelled with my brothers and I when we were younger, and it is so important to me to take my kids as well! I completely agree with you that mindset is everything. If you have a positive attitude about travel with baby, things will go well. We travelled abroad with our daughter and the people sitting around us were so nice! Even when my daughter threw a cup at the person sitting next to us who was on her laptop, the lady just laughed and began playing with her!
YAY!! That makes me so happy to hear!! And wow you are already a pro!! I should be taking advice from you mama!! I love hearing your positive experiences with traveling π HAHA that story is hilarious!!! I swear people on planes are way nicer about babies than most people think for sure!! Thanks again for your insight, I loved it!! XOXO
Amber,
Thank you so much for this super thoughtful list. Everything is so logical and true is you have to check for some important things of the country you are traveling. We don’t have a baby with my husband yet but we travel now a lot and definitely don’t want to stop when our family will grow.
You are very nice young lady and I absolutely enjoy how you find new articles for your blog.
Greetings from Finland,
Maria
I am so happy you found it helpful!! Thanks so much for the positive feedback, I appreciate it!! You can look back at these tips when you have a baby, and start to travel with him/her π Thank you for the sweet compliments and for following along!! I would love to visit Finland one day!! xoxo
Thank you SO SO much for these tips! They are great! We will be traveling soon for the 1st time with our 6 month old baby and will definitely put many of these tips to good use!
Awesome!! I am so glad to hear that!! Thank you so much for your comment π
I am not a mom yet, but this was so good to read! I can’t believe that you and David think of all of these things! For some reason when I look at the pics you just make it look so easy (which maybe it is, but there’s so much to think of!). But I think you guys are great for travelling with your babe! And I am def jealous that companies fly you first-class, luuuuckkyy haha. Lots of love, Beth. xoxx
Thanks so much for reading anyway!! Good advice for future moms too π And aww thank you!! Traveling is a lot of work, and it was nice to share more behind the scenes this time around. I am glad you liked the post, I appreciate it!! XO
This is such an informative post!!! Atticus looks so happy when he travels, love the snapchats of his giggles too! Thanks!!
Thank you Leah!! I appreciate it π Thanks for taking the time to read and comment!! xo
I am so thankful for this! I am a traveler and I’m pregnant with my first child (due in September), so I have been worried I would have to stay home once I have little Esther! This is so encouraging and very practical! Logging it away for our first trip with baby in December!
I am so happy to hear this!! And congrats!! I hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well π Esther is the cutest name!!! I love it! Thanks for reading love!!
This is amazing! Although I do not have a baby yet, this is good to know for the future! I think it is wonderful that you are sharing your tips from experience. You’re awesome and thanks for sharing! Have a great weekend!

Amber!! Thank you, these are so awesome! My husband and I are going to start trying for a baby very soon and my goal is to continue our travels as much as possible! This is such a wealth of information. You are amazing! Xo.
Aww thank you so much!! I am so happy to hear that!! I appreciate the positive feedback π xo
thank you!!!! really helpful!!! how do you handle him sleeping on the plane now that he is bigger? is he ok sleeping on the cramped seat? doesn’ t he roll over? my 11 month old was very annoyed last time we flew, he moves a lot when sleeping, so it was a terrible experience… so much easier when he was little! I’m flying again next month and already anxious!!!
You’re so welcome!! I am so glad you thought so!! And I just let him sleep on my lap!! It’s just the easiest I have found π When he was smaller he could just sleep in his carseat!! You’re so right, the older they get the more wiggly they get haha it becomes a little tricky! Good luck with your flight!! You will do great!! xo
You’re amazing!! Thanks for all these tips, I absolutely love your blog and Instagram! I’m a new mom myself to a six month old boy and I love hearing all your tips! I also hated when people used their baby as an excuse, because I mean come on, they’re so much fun and can go pretty much anywhere if you’re willing!
Thank you so much!! That means the world to me!! I am so happy you found the tips helpful. And I agree, babies should never be an excuse π Glad you think so too!! Thanks for reading mama!! xo
